Our journey starts from London Heathrow airport with a final destination of Kilimanjaro International Airport. The next stage is a ‘coach’ journey that will see us go through Moshi, Himo, Marangu before we reach our starting point of Rongai.
The typical day will look like the following:
- Wake up 6am (on the final day we wake at 11 p.m. to walk through the night)
- Quick wash!
- Breakfast 6.30am
- Set off between 7.30 to 8am
- Packed lunch
- Arrive at camp between 3 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.
- Tea and biscuits
- Dinner 7pm
- Early to bed
Day 1: Naremoru Gate to Simba camp
Meet porters at Naremoru Gate.
700 metres increase in altitude over 3 to 4 hours.
Through farm land and in to the rain forest.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp
Just over 1000 metres increase in altitude over 9 hours of trekking.
Changes in vegetation, gradually getting shorter.
Camp on edge of a lobelia zone.
Day 3: Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Just over 600 metres increase in altitude over 5 hours trekking.
Amazing views of Mawenzi Peak from camp.
Short acclimatisation walk in afternoon.
Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo
500 metres altitude gain over 6 hours trekking.
Slow trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo.
Rest in afternoon to prepare for summit day.
Day 5: Kibo to Gilmans Point to Uhuru Peak to Kibo to Horombo Camp
1300 metres altitude gain over 8 hours.
Reach Gilmans Point for sunrise.
Further trek round crater rim to Uhuru Peak.
2300 metres altitude loss over 6 hours.
Day 6: Horombo Camp to Marangu Park Gate
1900 metres altitude loss in 5 hours of trekking.
Transfer to Marangu for BIG celebrations.
